What is process automation in procurement?

Process automation is an exercise where complex business processes are automated using technology. Three functions are typically performed by this type of system: automating processes, centralizing information, and reducing the need for human input.

Process automation is designed to reduce bottlenecks, reduce errors, and improve data security — all the while increasing transparency, communication and processing speed. Process automation comes in handy for managing complex business systems and changing consumer preferences. As businesses consolidates tasks, fewer steps need to be performed, resulting in lower costs.

Some of the benefits of process automation are as follows:

  • By automating manual processes, businesses allow their employees to spend more time on other essential tasks. The total amount of work accomplished is higher.
  • Making services more available to users through automation.
  • Process automation reduces human error and increases reliability. There are times when automated systems can find solutions more quickly and reliably than humans.

As automation shifts tasks, workers are concerned about job losses. Research suggests that approximately 25% of jobs are at risk from automation due to robots' ability to perform them. At the same time, some experts also argue that automation makes room for more jobs, as AI and automation are not advanced enough to replace all jobs. Process automation will unlikely eliminate the vast majority of jobs in the near future.

Irrespective of the fact that process automation will lead to more or less jobs, it leads to improved efficiency in business processes. It has the potential to transform the way the world looks at business.
